Jingle Bell Run

We had another successful Jingle Bell Run once we finally had it. The 1st one was cancelled due to the BIG snow storm, so it was rescheduled for Dec. 23rd. Fleet Feet provided cocoa and cookies and it was a beautiful night for the run. We drew the name of the winner of the Garmin 305 and the winner is…..(drum roll)TinaMarie Bell of Coeur d’Alene.  Congratulations Tina!!!

Winter Warriors @ Fleet Feet

If you need a little incentive to get out and run when the weather is bad, you should run with the Winter Warriors. They run EVERY Tuesday and Thursday at 6pm and on Saturday at 8am.  There are walkers and runners and we really do have a good time; even if its 2 degrees or the puddles are knee deep!! There are prizes for attendance and you can get more info at Fleet Feet.

Road Runner Shirts

The new NIRR t-shirts are available for pickup at Fleet Feet Sports to all paid members. Sizes available are small through XL.

When and why did you start running?

The when was in the Spring of 2003. Previously I had run because it was part of sports or because it was part of my job when I was in the Marine Corp. but in 2003 it was for me. I had gotten REALLY overweight after I left the Marine Corps and had now started losing weight, so this seemed like the next step. I started out just working my way down 15th St toward Canfield Middle School . I knew it was a mile to the corner.  I felt pretty good when I was able to make it down and back without stopping, but what excited me was as I was able to turn the corner and kept progressing farther and farther down the road. Later that summer I ran my first 5K. It was during BalloonFest. I didn’t even tell my family I was going out to run in a “race”. I got a ribbon for my age group (I think there were only 2 of us....but I got a ribbon). See the Spring 2002 before(above) and Summer 2008 after(below) pictures.

How long have you lived in the CDA Area?

I have lived here for about 17 years now.

Why did you join the Road Runners?

I was getting tired of running alone and wanted to meet some other runners. Also Carol Travis had mentioned the group and said that I should consider joining.

What is your occupation?

I work in the IT Department for the Coeur d’Alene School District.

How often do you run?

Right now I am running 3 days a week. I do treadmill work 2 days a week and a longer run outside on Sundays.

Have you done any marathons or triathlons? (what was memorable about them)

I have done three ½ marathons, 4 triathlons and 1 marathon in my life. My first triathlon was actually back in 1984 in Carlsbad, CA. It was an Olympic distance. The Major I worked for decided he wanted to do one and needed someone to train with. I got picked!  It was a pretty good experience. After I started working out again, I ran some 5 and 10K’s with my sister-in-law. One of them was the 5K during the CDA Marathon. I watched the runners and thought “I can run a ½” (plus they got nicer t-shirts and a medal). So the next year I trained. It certainly wasn’t with a real plan, I just started running in the spring and kept increasing distance. That year it was a little cool and had a misty type rain… perfect for a first timer.  In 2008 I trained with the group at Fleet Feet for my 3rd ½. It was really a fun experience to do the program with so many great people and Garth was a wonderful coach. I was just happy doing my half’s and could think of no reason anyone needed to run 26 miles! But the group I was with thought otherwise and in October 2008, I ran my first marathon in Leavenworth, WA. It was probably one of the top 3 experiences I have had in my life!  Not only completing the run but to do it with such good friends made it a very memorable weekend.

What is your favorite local race?

I think it would have to be the Hangover Handicap run on New Year’s Day. It is a lot of fun. Everyone is wishing each other Happy New Year and just having a good time. It is a great way to start out the new year. (Now that Polar Bear deal is just plain crazy!)

Where and when are we most likely to see you running?

Well right now I have moved inside but when I am outside you can usually find me running with a group of friends out on the Centennial or Prairie Trails in the evenings during the week or on Sunday mornings.

What other interests, hobbies and pastimes do you have?

Well between work and working out there doesn’t seem to be much extra time. I do like to read and do Sudoku puzzles. Also when I get some time I like to cook. I like the big production type cooking like Thanksgiving or something that takes all day.

How many bicycles do you have?

I actually have 2 but one is 28 years old- a 10 speed Huffy Concourse. Still runs pretty good. In fact I had ridden it on the CDA Tri course several times before I bought my road bike this spring.  Of course once I bought the new one… well not so much on the old one anymore!

What are your running goals for the next 12 months?

Right now I am planning on doing most of the standard area runs but my big events are the CDA Half Marathon, the Boise Half Ironman, the Rock N Roll Marathon in Seattle, the Race the River Tri and the CDA Tri.  I have friend (another former Marine) that wants us to do the Marine Corps marathon in DC next Fall!

What advice would you give to other runners?

My advice is more for beginner runners. I would tell them that they just need to take that first step. Don’t worry if you can only run 10 feet. It doesn’t even matter if you can’t run. Just start and setup a routine that you will continue with. I have seen a lot of people that want to start but go out and run way too far and way too fast and then don’t go out again for a long time. Also find a group that you feel comfortable with. The Road Runners is a great example. Having friends to run or walk with makes it almost a more social event than a workout. I can tell you that with the lousy weather last spring, if there wasn’t group guilt to get me there some of those cold rainy evenings, I probably would have bailed. One final suggestion is to pick an event and sign up,; pay that entry fee. Then you are committed and I always figure I am too cheap to give away that money. Heck, I ran the marathon in Leavenworth because that was the cheap lap; it only cost $15 to run the second 13 miles!

On a completely different note….What is your favorite book? Favorite Movie?

Most of the time I like spy, or mystery novels but last spring, my friend Tracie loaned me her copy of The Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer by David A. Whitsett, Forrest A. Dolgener, Tanjala Jo Kole. I think that book helped me get mentally ready for the marathon as much as the running and training. Plus it was just a fun read.  I don’t think I have a favorite movie. I like all kinds.
