Membership Dues

The NIRR officers met on October 8th and discussed our expenses (insurance, etc) and found it necessary to raise the dues to $25.00 per calendar year.  I have included a link Active.com that you can pay online through Active.com or the mailing address if you prefer to mail your check. It really simplifies it for us if you pay online, but I understand too if you don’t want to. PLEASE send it in by Dec. 15th. I don’t want to have to nag, so please be prompt.

Feed the Food Bank Turkey Trot

On Saturday Nov. 22nd we will have a fun run/walk to benefit the Post Falls Food Bank. We will start the run/walk on the Centennial Trail near the Greyhound Park and run ~3 miles (give or take a half mile-it’s a secret). You can’t wear watches or any timing device and you must guess your finish time. The person coming closest to their guestimate will win a Turkey.  Entry fee will be $5.00 and non perishable food items for the food bank. We will have more info on registration, parking, etc. soon.

Member Spotlight

We are starting a column focusing on our members and you could be next!! Tawnya Bowman is our new membership coordinator and has been SO inspirational in recruiting runners into the fold and has MUCH to share.
I asked Tawnya some questions…..

>When and why did you start running?

January 2007, I was overweight, out of shape, unmotivated and of course in denial!!!  Until I got pictures back from our family Disney world vacation...YIKES!!!  I realized I had to do something.... I went back to Post Falls World Gym where I had a pseudo membership (you know the kind you pay for, but don't bother to use!!).  I ran into Heath Wiltse who was talking to a gal who didn't run, but was in relatively good shape.  He was telling her that she could run the Coeur d Alene Marathon...in just 4 months!!!  Wow!!!  That was all the motivation I needed.  I found a marathon in San Francisco in July that sounded fun.  I liked that it was considered challenging. I started on the treadmill... run 30 sec, walk 30...seriously!  When I built up to run 14 min, walk 30 sec I thought I was a complete stud.  Soon, I was running 2 miles, walking 30 sec.  I still run that pattern to this day.  I like to walk the water stops because I am a complete klutz and can't run and drink at the same time...

How long have you lived in the CDA area?

I have lived in Coeur d Alene since 1999 after being displaced by a flood in Grand Forks, ND.

>Why did you join the Road Runners?

I was hesitant to join any running groups, because I didn't really consider myself a runner.  I am slower...more of a jogger.  I was invited to the Jingle Bell Run last year and had a blast.  I was struggling with my running after herniating a disc in my low back.  Alyssa Shaw and Tracie Ferris ("real runners") stayed with me the entire time.  They made me feel like I belonged.  I really believed in myself as a runner, giving me the courage to join a group of "real runners".

>What is your occupation?

I am a nurse practitioner with a neurosurgical practice.

>How often do you run?

I run 3 days a week.  Mostly group runs.  Two short runs during the week with a longer run on Sunday...

>Have you done any marathons or triathlons? (what was memorable about them)

I have done 3 marathons.  Each was memorable in its own way.  The last being in Leavenworth this Oktoberfest.  We had a group of about 12 runners that trained most of the season together.  We traveled and lodged together in a great cabin and partied like rock stars afterwards.  This was a great event.  Loved the race, the town and most of all...my peeps!!!

I started doing triathlons this summer.  That is where my heart is.  I just love this event.  I love the balance of the different activities, I love the athletes, I love my trainers... I am planning to work toward Ironman 2010 as a long term goal!!!

>What is your favorite local race?

I love running in large groups of people, so picking a favorite event is difficult.  My favorite local running race is probably either the Coeur d Alene Half Marathon or Spring Dash.  My favorite triathlon is probably Race the River (my first!!!)

>Where and when are we most likely to see you running?

If you want to catch me running...head out on the Centennial Trail somewhere near Starbucks on Sunday morning with a group of 4 or 5 of my favorite people!!!

>What other interests, hobbies and pastimes do you have?

I teach RPM (indoor group cycling) at The Peak in Post Falls.  I love to read and knit.  I also breed Chihuahuas.

 >How many bicycles do you have?

One beautiful 2008 Specialized Comp Transition Tri Bike that I won in a raffle after a triathlon in Minnesota.

>What are your running goals for the next 12 months?

I plan to learn to water jog while recovering from my neck surgery, then I am going to concentrate on improving on my speed and ability to run hills after taking a couple months of recovery.

>On a completely different note….What is your favorite book?  Favorite Movie?

I have so many favorite movies, but toward the top of the list I would include The Bucket List, PS I Love You and the Notebook...I love a good cry!!!
